November 25th 2007 KWO and the Hat-trick of Gold

The Kew Wind Orchestra has won GOLD at the regional National Concert Band Festival heats in Colchester for the third time in a row, with its challenging programme of Hindemith's 'March', Jonathan Dove's 'The Ringing Isle', and 'Awayday' by Adam Gorb.

The adjudicators, who gave top marks for tone, tuning, balance, dynamics, articulation, phrasing and style, praised the band's 'excellent articulation and rhythmic integrity' and 'tremendous rhythmic vigour and panache'. KWO walked away with the only gold of the day.

KWO will now be heading to the NCBF finals that will take place in Warwick in April 2008.

July 6th 2007 For Emily...

KWO will be playing in a special concert to help a former Mid Sussex Concert Band member Emily Darbyshire.

The 'Canadian Connections' concert, to be held on Friday July 6th at St John's, Smith Square, Westminster, at 7:30pm, will be used to help raise money for Emily.

18 year old trumpeter Emily caught meningitis last year and spent two months in a coma. Her remarkable bravery means she has made an extraordinary recovery, but she is still in a wheelchair and her co-ordination would benefit greatly from music therapy.

Money will be raised for the Nordoff-Robbins music therapy charity and will be spent directly on helping Emily on her road to recovery.

You can book tickets at the St John's Box office on 0207 222 1061 or at www.sjss.org.uk

March 31st 2007 Hindemith is a hit!

The Kew Wind Orchestra has won gold again at the National Concert Band Festival finals with a 'spellbinding' performance of Hindemith's challenging Symphony in B Flat.

The award makes KWO the only wind orchestra in Britain to win gold for two years in a row in the 'open' class.

Judge Geoffrey Brand said: "You have absolutely left them spellbound. Well done. A splendid, brave choice of a magnificent work conceived for windband by Hindemith. A performance of which, you can feel, I hope, very satisfied."

Fellow adjudicator Simone Rebello added: "A wonderful performance. Full of style, vigour, colour, life and excitement. A great range of dynamics are seen throughout."

"A total understanding and commitment was shown by all to produce such a finely honed performance. Superb."

The event, which was held at The Sage Gateshead, was unique in the festival's history as all the bands in the open class were awarded gold. NCBF director Keith Allen paid tribute to the high standard achieved by all the groups.
