NCBF 2009

The Kew Wind Orchestra enjoyed another success by picking up a fourth consecutive gold award at the National Concert Band Festival (NCBF) finals, held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, Wales.

Judges Simone Rebello, one of the UK's leading percussionists, and John Reynolds, Head of Woodwind Studies at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, awarded the band gold marks in every category. They praised the band's programme of two pieces, Harlequin by Bruce Broughton, and Paganini Variations by Philip Wilby, commenting that there was a "real sense of rhythm, and commitment to take risks with dynamics. Virtuosity was heard right across the band..."

The performance of Paganini Variations, which rounded off the band's programme, was given particular praise by the judges; John Reynolds even commented that it was a piece he was keen to perform with the wind orchestra at the Welsh College. He also said that 'this was often excellent ensemble and individual playing, within extremely challenging repertoire.'

The NCBF festival allows over 5,000 musicians from the UK to participate in a range of regional heats, all with the aim of reaching the NCBF Final, this year held on 18th and 19th April in Cardiff.
